Dear Editor

Following the latest terrorist near miss over Detroit, it is difficult to believe the money being spent on counter insurgency in Afghanistan would not be better spent on intelligence gathering in Europe and America.

This would enable the western democracies to start taking the initiative, without which terrorism cannot be defeated.  We have now too many examples where the perpetrators are home grown.

We also have to mature enough socially to understand that whilst all Muslims are not air terrorists, air terrorists are Muslim.  Given there will always be limited resources for security personnel the focus must be on where the threat is likely.  If necessary special security checkpoints for them alone, observing carefully their dignity and preserving their goodwill.

There is a very widespread unspoken feeling amongst the British that random searching of one in eight non-muslim, middle aged businessmen or tourist housewives to satisfy politically correct computer programmes is a gross misuse of resources.

Dear Sir,

Interesting is it not, that with China’s outrageous human rights record, especially where Tibet or the Falun Gong are concerned, the Foreign Office and Prime Minister remain mute.

Yet they decide to go to the wall for a convicted drug dealer.  What a weird set of priorities.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sir

Baroness Amos seems to think that climate science is ‘settled’ and that thinking people have ‘moved on’. She clearly has no understanding of science. It is never settled. New information breaks almost daily. Most of the dynamic new thinking is coming from Australia, led by Professor Ian Plimer.

The world climate has been static for 12 years now in spite of the growing man made CO2 emissions. She must recognise this and ‘move on’ herself.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sir

I am delighted that the Grimsby Smoked Fish Producers Association has won special European Status.

May I take this opportunity of thanking the EU and the Common Fishery Policy for all the unstinting help and support the industry has received since Edward Heath handed it over to them.

Yours

Dear Sir

The exclusive Times survey has confirmed that the majority of British people do not believe that Man has caused global warming.

In its accompanying leader it denigrates everyone who shares view as 'global village idiots.' Including, presumably, the 30,000 independent scientists who also support this view.

It is precisely this sort of oafish approach that re-inforces such scepticism.

Yours faithfully

Dear Sir

Now I see how the government treats their scientists when they don’t toe the line I begin to understand why they continue to spout their nonsense on climate change.

Dear Sir

I wonder if I can ease the mind of Chimpoo Trakullertsthien on global warming.  The hottest year on record was 1934 the world has been cooling since 1998 and he is getting hot and bothered for no reason.  The world was warmer in both the Roman period and Medieval warm period.  Just part of nature’s natural cycle.

Yours faithfully

To Selby Times

Dear Editor

I would like to congratulate the Selby Times for again sponsoring the Selby in Bloom competition.

It is a delight to see the profusion of colours in the town, which gladden the heart, even on the greyest of summer days.

As 'Bloom in Selby' I trust that this competition will continue to run for many years and bring delight to both the competitors and those who benefit from their efforts.

Yours

Godfrey Bloom, Selby's MEP for the UK Independence Party

Dear Sir

I notice Mr Edward McMillan-Scott suggests that the European Parliament “don’t take any notice of UKIP”. He is of course quite right. Neither do they take any notice of the French, Dutch or Irish electorate. We are in good company.

Your sincerely

E Miliband Esq
Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change

Dear Mr Miliband

It would appear that as usual this government has not thought through the dire consequences of its actions.  This time on wind turbines.

Dear Sir

Only UKIP voted against Romania and Bulgaria joining the ‘Sans Frontiers’ EU.

Their ascension was sponsored heavily by the government and the European Parliamentary Conservative Party. In the light of recent events I think the people should know that before June 4th! Read More

Dear Sir

Energy policy, like most other things these days, is the province of Brussels Bureaucrats and the European “Parliament”.

We are taking decision’s involving the spending of millions of tax payers’ money, risking thousands of jobs and perpetuating the situation where the people of the United Kingdom pay more for their energy than any other country in the industrialized world.

Yet there are many questions still unanswered. Perhaps your readers can help. I do not pretend to know, yet I am suppose to have a modest input into the decision making process.

The questions I see are as follows:

Dear Sir

One of the great pleasures of being an MEP, believe me there are fewer than you might expect, is an involvement with schools in the constituency.

I help one particular school organize its lower sixth visits to various professional practices and industries. A preliminary look at life before young people are too committed to any particular line of vocational study.

Occasionally one un-covers a stunning piece of information from executives at a very senior level who let things slip when not protected by their public relation minders. Last June produced a real stunner, the chief scientific officer of a major energy company told us that unless the political green posturing changed at European Level. (Energy policy like much else is the provenance of Brussels) The lights would go out in 2015.

Dear Sir
Perhaps you will permit me a few lines, as a professional financial economist to respond
to articles by professional politicians giving there views on the recent credit crunch. In
2004 after the ENRON crisis the EU endorsed a new mark to market rule. They are
known as Basel II in the financial services industry, it is embodied in two directives
2006/48 and 2006/49. I will not bore your readers with the details but broadly they insist
on a ‘daily solvency statement’
