Letter to The Chairman of the Countryside Alliance asking them to confirm if they are non-political.

25 January 2005

Dear Mr Jackson

As you will know UKIP are totally committed to country sports and we play an active role in the European Parliament to generate support from like-minded people in the European Union. Thousands of our members are also members of the Countryside Alliance, myself, my family and my staff included. Indeed we marched in our thousands in the mutual cause. I won my seat in Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire from an anti foxhunting, Labour MEP and attracted nearly 250,000 votes, the majority from Labour. We pushed nationally the Liberal Democrats into fourth place overall.

You can imagine, therefore, my distress when hunting last week with the Middleton to be berated (my wife included) by a canvasser purporting to be a member of the Countryside Alliance for not pledging my vote to the Conservative Party in the forthcoming election.

I was under the impression the Countryside Alliance was a non-political party. If this is not the case I feel obliged to let my NEC know so they can tell our members that support for the Countryside Alliance is no longer welcome.

Please put my mind and those of our mutual members at rest by continuing the position.

Yours sincerely

Godfrey Bloom

And the reply from the Countryside Alliance :

Dear Mr Bloom

Thank you for your letter of 25th January to John Jackson who happens to be away at the moment.

I can confirm that the Countryside Alliance is politically non-aligned and that this situation will not change. Any individual who wishes to canvass support for one political party or another can do in their individual capacity, not that of the Alliance itself.

I hope this clarifies the position.

Yours sincerely

Simon Hart
Chief Executive, Countryside Alliance
