... and the Dutch say Nee !
With the European Union already reeling from finding out the French people have a mind of their own, the Dutch referendum dealt the EU Constitution its second major blow in just a few days.

Apparently the good people of the Netherlands also have a strange view of democracy. Perhaps they don’t realise that good EU citizens are supposed to vote in favour of anything the EU suggests. Obviously they have misunderstood what they were expected to do, and deserve to be forced to vote again like a schoolchild who has got his sums wrong on his homework.

In a lot of ways, the Dutch ‘Nee’ is an even greater setback than the French ‘Non’. Firstly, the scale of the majority is such that it would be difficult to imagine the Dutch changing their minds, no matter how much pressure the EU applies.

Secondly, the French largely opposed the Constitution for its contents. The Dutch generally opposed the Constitution because they disapproved of the principle. A redrafted Constitution might satisfy the French; it will not satisfy the Dutch.

With the French and Dutch both now firmly in the No camp, perhaps the Spanish voted Yes without realising the consequences. Should Spain now be required to vote again?
