Godfrey Bloom has attacks the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly over its calls for a ‘smoke-free workplace environment’.
PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release – 16.45 hours 17th October

Local UK Independence Party MEP Godfrey Bloom has attacked the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly over its calls for a ‘smoke-free workplace environment’.

“The regional assembly has been set up against the wishes of the public. It is unelected and unaccountable. The people of the North-East voted overwhelmingly against elected regional assemblies, yet the government stubbornly refuses to disband our unelected one. This unwanted, unelected regional assembly has absolutely no mandate to dictate public policy”

Last year the Yorkshire and Humber Assembly had a £4.7 million budget, of which £1.5 million was funded by the local authorities through council tax.

In November, the No campaign took 78% of the votes in the North-East referendum. Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott described the result as an “emphatic defeat”, yet claimed that “As a government we believe in letting the people have their say”.

The UK Independence Party also hit out at John Prescott’s comment, saying that “The government promised the British people a referendum on the euro, but ran scared when they realised they would lose. They promised a referendum on the European Constitution, but did not deliver because they were going to lose. Then when they did lose the referendum in the North-East they did not honour the public vote and these unelected assemblies keep taking taxpayers’ money”

The UK Independence Party call for the introduction of a system of direct democracy. They believe that the public should be allowed to call a binding referendum on any major issue where 5% of the electorate sign a petition calling for one. They point out that a similar system works well in Switzerland and in some states of the USA.

UKIP are currently gathering over 1 million signatures petitioning the government to allow a referendum on replacing Britain’s EU membership with a free trade agreement. The petition can be signed online at www.letthepeopledecide.co.uk.
