Tory Leadership
|
For years, the Conservative Party has proposed that power be returned from the EU to the UK. They proudly championed their belief that Britain must ‘renegotiate the terms of entry into the EU’. Of course, renegotiation can only take place with the blessing of all the other 24 EU nations – and in any case, it is impossible under the Treaty of Rome. The policy was undeliverable, but why let facts get in the way of policy?
David Cameron’s election heralds a new era for the Conservative Party. Until now, their policies have only been undeliverable if they actually manage to win a general election. David Cameron goes one step further - under his leadership, its policies are impossible whilst in opposition!
He pledged that as leader of the Conservatives, he would take his party out of the European People’s Party, which campaigns for a federal European superstate and spent money supporting ‘Yes’ votes in the referenda on the European Constitution. Unfortunately, leaving the EPP requires the consent of the MEPs’ leader, and Mr. Kirkhope refuses to leave. Mr. Cameron’s policy is unworkable – clearly he hopes that the public will miss his failure to carry out one of the few policies actually discernable during his leadership campaign.
In David Cameron’s own words, "I believe in consistent politics. I think you must say the same thing in Brussels, London and Strasbourg. I believe in an EU in which we take back those key powers over social and employment legislation that are doing so much damage to business. My Conservative Party will have the same message wherever it is." When will the Conservatives learn that such policies cannot be carried out in practice against the will of the other 24 EU countries?
There are just two coherent policies on the EU. Either we remain members, accepting a federal superstate, or we leave the EU altogether. At least the Lib Dem position is honest.
