Godfrey Bloom "Crusades" for cod! : Wednesday 21 December 2005

Wednesday 21 December 2005 - Immediate Release
Godfrey Bloom "Crusades" for cod!
Yorkshire's fishermen should be bracing themselves for cuts to cod fishing, as EU Ministers hold talks in Brussels today. One proposal is to slash North Sea fishing by 15%.
Godfrey Bloom, MEP for Yorkshire today spoke to Morag Ritchie from the "Cod Crusaders" campaign, in the hope that UKIP could launch a joint venture, with the aim to keep the British fishing industry alive and fight to retake control of British fishing waters back from the EU.
Mrs. Ritchie said: "We are very happy to work with Godfrey on our campaign. The government have consistently failed to understand that fierce competition is our problem, not low fish stocks. Bear in mind that in the last couple of years, while Spain and Ireland were commissioning boats, and receiving European funding to do so, British fishermen were being decommissioned and their industry consigned to the dustbin. It is vital that we keep fishing alive in this country".
Godfrey Bloom said "I am absolutely convinced that it is vital that Britain regain control of it's coastline and be allowed to negotiate with other countries on where they can and cannot fish."
Speaking of his Yorkshire constituency, Godfrey said "While the numbers directly employed by fishing are limited, many coastal communities in Yorkshire depend on fishing as one of the few off-peak industries in the County. Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby, Grimsby, Hull...Their fishermen will obviously be most directly effected by any drop in the quota, but think of the knock on effect locally, and cut in quota will decimate local secondary industries like boatbuilding. This will make a resounding difference to these communities in our County."
Mr Bloom added: "Is this another battle lost before we've even begun? Blair gave away £1 billion a year of taxpayers money with the rebate deal. Will the fisheries minister, Ben Bradshaw, be quite so charitable with Yorkshire's fishing industry?"
