Bloom "mortified" by EU fisheries decision : Thursday 22 December 2005
Yorkshire's fishing will be "decimated" by 15% cuts to cod fishing, as EU Ministers slash quotas

Godfrey Bloom, MEP for Yorkshire today said that he was "mortified" by the decision by EU fisheries ministers in Brussels to cut fishing quotas by 15%: "This decision ís the death knell for the our local fishing industry."

The government have failed to understand that fierce competition is our problem, not low fish stocks. They are misreading the situation. If we were able to regain control of our coastline and fishing waters and were allowed to negotiate with other countries on where they can and cannot fish, these situations could be avoided. Does [fisheries Minister] Ben Bradshaw not understand that it is vital that we keep fishing alive? The environment minister, Jim Knight, called this a "Good deal". Tell that to fishermen in Hull who's livelihood is at stake.

"Does even the fisheries minister understand that he has only one vote out of twenty five on all European fishing matters. He ought to be aware of it, since this has been the case since the British government ceded British fishing grounds to Europe in 1973."

"It will not be a very Merry Christmas for the fishermen of Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby, Grimsby or Hull" Bloom added gloomily.
