Are Yorkshire Morris Dancers to be subject to a "whitewash" by political correctness? : January 12th 2006
Morris dancing in Yorkshire could be under threat from politically correct legislation, a local MEP said today.
Yorkshire MEP Godfrey Bloom of the U.K. Independence Party said that moves to outlaw the ‘Mummers Festival’ in Padstow, Cornwall – where ‘mummers’ black their faces and take to the streets – could bring an end to one of Yorkshire's favourite folk groups, the Flagcrackers of Skipton.

Mr Bloom said, “The Labour MP for Hackney, Diane Abbott, thinks that the blacking up of faces is racially motivated and is seeking to outlaw the Padstow festival. My fear is that this is just the thin end of the wedge, and once Padstow is gone, the Flagcrackers could be the next target.

“Unthinking political correctness is one of the banes of our age, in this case mis-interpreting traditional events in an attempt to find racism where none exists.”
