Exploitation of women and children through illegal trafficking and prostitution
|
UK Independence Party MEP Godfrey Bloom has attacked a report in the European Parliament for ‘spectacularly missing the point’ about taking action against the exploitation of women and children through illegal trafficking and prostitution.
“The report suggests many expensive but ineffective measures to try to curb this harmful trade. But it ignores the most obvious problem – illegal smuggling of people across national borders is far easier when countries do not have proper border controls!”
Most EU countries have no checks at all between borders under the Schengen Agreement, and successive UK governments have abolished embarkation controls.
Godfrey Bloom continued,
“Isn’t it about time we recognised that society cannot protect illegal immigrants? They have come into the country without the protection of the law, so they are the most susceptible to being abused. Until we curb illegal immigration, people will continue to work illegally in factory sweatshops for slave wages – and some will be cynically exploited in the sex ‘industry’. Gimmicks such as an EU-wide ‘anti-trafficking day’ at taxpayers’ expense will not help – the policy of not policing our own borders is creating this problem in the first place.”
Godfrey Bloom has tabled an amendment in protest at the report by Christa Prets.

Note To Editors - Text of amendment:
“Considers that the removal of border restrictions within the EU; whilst facilitating legitimate business, also facilitates to a greater degree illegal business owing to the removal of such procedures which may have made such practices more difficult”
