European Parliament Votes For Imperial Measures
|
In an astonishing vote in Brussels today the European Parliament did what the British Labour Government would not do, it supported the retention of Imperial measurements.
The UK Independence Party demanded a "roll-call" vote (electronically recording exact numbers of votes cast) on an amendment to a Directive on packaging-sizes.
This amendment reads, "Â…where the system of Imperial units of measurement is in force - on the interval from one third of a pint to six pints, in the following eight sizes: third, half, one, two, three, four, five, six."
UKIP-MEP's were delighted when this amendment was carried by the enormous margin of 448 to 89 - which showed that all three largest groups had voted solidly for it.
"They're already lining up for the 'defenders-of-the-pint' photo call," laughed UKIP-MEP, Godfrey Bloom (Yorks and N. Lincs) "but, if the vote had been a simple show-of-hands, they probably wouldn't have bothered!"
He went on, "Isn't it about time that all votes were counted like this, to ensure that people can find out what their MEPs are voting for, rather than being left unaccountable as they are today?"
