UKIP MEP Speaks Out Against Government Waste
Yorkshire’s UK Independence Party MEP Godfrey Bloom reacted angrily to the Taxpayers’ Alliance book ‘The Bumper Book of Government Waste’, released yesterday.

Godfrey Bloom said “This book exposes massive amounts of government waste at local, national and EU level. Page after page, we read about lack of common sense, projects going over budget and bureaucracy. Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dems won’t take this report seriously because their councils are all responsible for it being written in the first place!”

The book also definitively answers the question ‘How many council workers does it take to change a lightbulb?’ According to the head of community care at Doncaster Council, the answer is four – one to change the bulb, one to hold the ladder, one to switch the electricity off and one to comfort the occupant.

Godfrey Bloom asked “Are we surprised that Hull City Council told a councillor that it costs £50 to change a 35p light bulb? But the appalling thing is that it is the European Union that takes the prize for wasting taxpayers’ money most efficiently. Does anyone know why taxpayers are still paying for fishing in Greenland waters for non-existent fish?”

According to a report from the EU's own Internal Audit Service (IAS), an estimated £4.5 billion of the EU's annual budget is wasted each year.

Godfrey Bloom added “That is only the wastage that the EU is prepared to admit to – but when the Court of Auditors say that over 90% of the EU budget is subject to fraud and mismanagement, who knows what the true figure is?”
