Words, words, words: When will we get action on crime?
For immediate release 28th August 2006

Words, words, words:

When will we get action on crime?

"The ordinary people of Britain are just getting sick of this", said Godfrey Bloom MEP today as he responded to the reported statements of Ken Macdonald the Director of Public Prosecutions(DPP).

"When he says that, 'The perception that no one looks out for them [victims] and that it's only defendants whose rights are taken seriously is not wildly wrong', it is reasonable to ask who on earth he thinks has been in charge of criminal justice for the last ten years? Him and people like him", said Mr Bloom.

In the last couple of months we have had the Prime Minister, the Home Secretary and the Attorney General, not to mention the Lord Chancellor all spouting pious words about 'putting the victim at the heart of the criminal justice system'. "But the reality is that none seems to give a damn", Bloom continued, "At the same time we have had demands that prisoners be released early due to prison overcrowding, we have heard that shoplifting is to be downgraded to be a minor misdemeanour" ,

"Is it any wonder that this government is just not trusted on crime; actions, as always, speak louder than words."

"Weak sentencing, poor education and the knowledge that you are unlikely to get caught let alone imprisoned are all contributing factors. So it seems is the abject hypocrisy of our political masters. It is time to change all these things," said Bloom.
