Repairs to organs will be effectively illegal from July 1st of this year.
Dear Sir

After hundreds of years of a tradition of beauty, ill thought out Brussels legislation is about to devastate another aspect of this countries life. Despite being made aware of the problem well in advance our government is bringing in legislation that will over time silence pipe organs for good.

The legislation in question is a combination of something called "Restriction of Hazardous Substances - RoHS" and the "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment - WEEE Directives". These are of course brought in from the European Union and inserted into our law by statute without a single word of debate in Westminster. According to the Institute of British Organ Building "organ pipes last almost indefinitely, and have no adverse environmental effects – they are never disposed of into landfill as old metal is very easily recycled into new pipes!" However because their fans are powered by electricity and the pipes are made of lead alloy they are hit by this legislation. As they say, “it is inconceivable that five centuries of tradition can be destroyed at a stroke of a pen in Brussels". What this means is that repairs to organs will be effectively illegal from July 1st of this year.

The UK Independence Party of course voted against this legislation, that was supported by all other UK parties in the European parliament, precisely because of the vast possible array of unintended consequences. Nobody suggests that this is what the well meaning envirocrats wanted to silence church music, it is just the lack of care and Westminster's inability to scrutinise the legislation, despite foreknowledge of the problem, leads us to conclude that yet again we have a case of bad EU law being over zealously interpreted by an uncaring government.

People can get in touch with the campaign to save the organs by going to www.pipes4organs.org

Yours faithfully
