Controversial Euro MP calls for resignation
Local MEP Godfrey Bloom today accused the government of failing victims of crime after it was revealed that a convicted paedophile who was released from prison early could serve just 5 years following a second horrific attack, this time on a three-year-old girl.

Giving Craig Sweeney1 a life sentence, Judge John Griffith Williams QC said that Sweeney should not be considered for parole for at least 5 years.

UK Independence Party MEP Godfrey Bloom said, “There should be an immediate investigation into who authorised this monster’s early release from prison. If whoever is responsible lacks the courage to resign, then he or she should be sacked to prevent more innocent victims falling prey to similar offenders.”

But it was the government’s sentencing policy that drew the sharpest criticism from the local MEP.

“Sweeney was sentenced to just three years for sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl, and served barely half that. Kidnap and sexual assault are now apparently worth just 5 years for a repeat offence. How many more victims will it take before someone realises that this pervert should never be released?”

But Mr. Bloom avoided an all-out attack on the judiciary. “Undoubtedly, some judges are out of touch with reality when passing lenient sentences. But for the most part, they operate within the guidelines passed down by the Lord Chancellor’s office. The government refuses to get tough with crime; the victims’ blood is on their own hands”
