At last, the government admits it's failed on Europe : 15.00hrs Thursday 14th June 2006
|
The government will admit today that is has failed to convince Britain that membership of the EU is worthwhile. The newly appointed Minister for Europe, Geoff Hoon, will admit in a speech that their massive propaganda campaign to persuade people of the benefits of EU membership has failed.
Mr Hoon is in Brussels today to present a speech to the Centre for European Policy Research.
The new minister has also fallen foul of some dodgy arithmetic when he claims that only one in three people see benefit in being a part of the EU, the same as thirty years ago. At the time, it was supported by one in six people.
Every poll shows that two thirds of people in this country do not want to be part of the European Union.
Local UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom said, "Even though the government is admitting that the majority of people in this country do not want to be part of the EU, they are still planning ways of bringing back the thoroughly discredited Constitutional Treaty, which was rejected by the French and Dutch electorate."
He went on, "The Tory party is no better. We have seen David Cameron going back on the only promise he made during his leadership campaign to pull his MEPs out of the EPP and abandoning plans to bring UK territorial waters under control of the UK government by supporting the Common Fisheries Policy."
And Roger Knapman, leader of the UK Independence Party, commented, "The UK Independence Party is now the only party standing up for British interests both at home and in Europe." |
