Home Office throws in the towel over immigration controls : 15.00hrs Thursday 14th June 2006
|
News that the Home Office are considering granted yet another amnesty to half a million immigrants should come as no surprise. It is the third time that the Labour government have conceded defeat and allowed failed asylum seekers to stay.
"With no border controls, and no idea who is coming in and out of the country, this surrender by the Home Office highlights the complete sham that is our immigration and asylum policy" said UK Independence Party MEP Godfrey Bloom.
He added, "The surrendering of immigration controls to the EU by this government and the Tories has exacerbated the long list of failures which has resulted in four asylum amnesties in the past 15 years."
He went on "The claims by David Davis that even speculating about this amnesty is 'highly irresponsible' is yet another example of rank Tory hypocrisy, as he conveniently ignores the actions of the previous Tory government."
Between 1991 and 1994, the Tories granted amnesty to 32,300 people.
Mr Bloom concluded, "failed asylum seekers should be deported: such action as we see by New Labour and the Tories is just a further invitation to challenge the failing UK asylum system."

Notes to editors:
Amnesty has been granted three times previously: The Tories allowed 32,300 failed asylum seekers to stay between 1991 and 1994 Jack Straw permitted 21,500 to stay between 1998/1999 David Blunkett allowed 50,000 asylum seekers who had applied before 2000 to remain.
