Local MEP attacks 'past his sell-by date' PM over immigration
Yorkshire MEP Godfrey Bloom has attacked the government after it admitted today that it did not know the number of failed asylum seekers living in the UK. “This is a matter of basic competence in government, which seems to be sadly lacking in the Home Office. Tony Blair cannot keep passing on blame to every new Home Secretary he appoints – how much longer must we have a PM who is past his sell-by date?”

“The public want a fair immigration system which helps those in genuine fear of persecution. They do not want over a million1 failed asylum seekers, illegal immigrants and workers from Eastern Europe when our schools, housing, hospitals, roads and police force are already overstretched.”

Home Office Minister Liam Byrne said2 it was difficult to know how many failed asylum seekers were in the UK because the numbers leaving the country have not been counted since 1994. In response, Godfrey Bloom also called for the return of embarkation controls so that “we actually have a fighting chance of knowing who is in the country at any given time.”

Notes to editors:

1 – National Audit Office estimates 283,000 failed asylum seekers currently living in the UK, but latest figures show that it could be as high as 450,000.

Home Office ‘best estimate’ of illegal immigrants living in the UK is 430,000 but the government admits it could be as high as 572,000. 375,000 Eastern European workers have registered since EU expansion, but the true figure is likely to be nearer 562,000 according to a Newsnight survey. Total figure 1 – 1.5 million.
